From friends or bloggers who have been to Barcelona, you may have heard of the city’s famous delicious tapas. In fact, tapas are just one of many influential things that have been associated with Barcelona, and in a much broader context, Spain. But did you know that this dish literally fits a king? Richard ODALE of The Daily Meal traveled to Spain to find out why tapas are so important in the country: <\/p>\n

Tapas have been an integral part of Spain’s social scene for almost 800 years. Tapas are usually consumed as an appetizer or a full meal, and this custom of eating small bites promotes a healthy lifestyle. <\/p>\n

The tradition began as medicinal advice. When King Alfonso X of Castile fell ill in the 13th century, his doctor suggested he eat light snacks with a glass of wine at regular intervals throughout the day. Upon returning to full health, the King ordered by decree that all bars in the castle serve a bite of food with each drink. <\/p>\n

The custom is still widespread in much of Spain, although these days bars generally offer olives or nuts – which contain healthy fats – and some bars offer a slice of baguette with a topping (called “pintxos”).<\/p>\n

Tuna, anchovies, and salmon are favored ingredients, as they contain high amounts of omega-3 fats, which reduce the risk of heart disease.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For the uninitiated, tapas is the general name for a small dish with ingredients such as nuts, olives, and fish. Tapas are usually served while standing, but you will have to make yourself noticed by the kitchen staff so that you can be served, and they are meant to be shared with your friends. In Barcelona alone, there are plenty of fantastic tapas bars, such as Ziryab, that you can visit. <\/p>\n

Authentic tapas, especially if you flew all the way to Spain to find the best tapas in Barcelona, is really beneficial for your health. Nutritionists recommend eating small amounts of food to prevent your digestive system from overworking while giving you enough energy to face the day. Healthy portions of the ingredients can help reduce fatty acids in the bloodstream. <\/p>\n

Tapas are not only appetizing, but they can also be energy-delivering.
