Few historical figures have left such a deep, yet largely unknown, mark as Ziryab. His name gives life to our restaurant in the Born, but do you really know who this character was, the one who revolutionised Al-Andalus more than a thousand years ago? Let us tell you.
Ziryab’s origins: from Baghdad to Córdoba
Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Nafi, nicknamed Ziryab (“blackbird” in Persian, because of his voice and his dark complexion), was born around the year 789 in the region of Baghdad, at the heart of the Abbasid Caliphate. A musical prodigy from a young age, his talent aroused the envy of his teacher at court, which pushed him to set out on a long journey westward. In the year 822, after that journey, he arrived in Córdoba, at that time the cultural epicentre of the Islamic world on the Iberian Peninsula, where he was welcomed as an advisor to the Umayyad court.
A polymath ahead of his time
What makes Ziryab unique is not only his music, but the breadth of his knowledge. He was, at once:
- A musician and composer, creator of a five-string lute and founder of a musical school that remained influential for generations.
- A gastronome, who introduced new ingredients, the serving of food in courses (starter, main course, dessert) and the use of the glass cup at the table.
- A pioneer of luxury and etiquette, establishing standards of protocol, hygiene and fashion that shaped Andalusi society.
- A poet, astronomer and expert in cosmetics, with knowledge ranging from geography to natural perfumes.
His legacy in Andalusi culture
Thanks to Ziryab, Al-Andalus experienced a true revolution in everyday customs: from how people ate to how they dressed or took care of their bodies. His influence transcended generations and laid the foundations for a refinement that Europe would take centuries to reach.
Why does our restaurant bear his name?
At Ziryab we believe in that same idea of fusion, curiosity and hospitality that defined our historical namesake. Our Mediterranean cuisine with Arab touches, our wine selection and our shisha lounge in the Born are a small tribute to that adventurous, refined spirit.
